Yong: More than one way to continue struggle
"Although it would be fitting for the SAPP President to be a wakil rakyat, I honestly feel there is more than one way to struggle on. I will continue to speak up at BN meetings, in the media and other forums.
"Through official and unofficial channels, I will continue to be of service to the people and to the country. SAPP will continue to make sure that our team of YBs will serve you wholeheartedly and struggle without fail.
"This is my promise to you, that our struggle continues and I will always be by your side," he said at a briefing to SAPP members and supporters at the party's Kota Kinabalu operations room in Luyang on the eve of Nomination Day.
In the 1996 debate over the rotation system of the Chief Minister post, Yong said he had quoted the teachings of Confucius - out of the three basic aspects of governance - food for the people, weapons for war or trustworthiness in the leaders - which is the most important?
Confucius said that without food, people will die, without weapons, countries will be invaded. But without trustworthiness in its leaders, then the country and society will collapse. Even food and weapons will not be able to save the country.
"This means that trust and integrity of the leaders are
fundamental to the future of a country or a government or, in our case, SAPP as
a serious political party of the future.
