ULTERIOR MOTIVE ON THE COAL FIRED POWER PLANT

CONTRADICTING theory based on general principles and research that eventually designates hidden intention apart from the necessity of a coal fired power plant to boost the shortage of electricity in the east coast of Sabah.

COAL must transforms the various types of energy that goes through different kinds of apparatus before electricity is generated. Coal is burnt to heat a boiler tank, to produce pressurized steam that goes through a regulating and filtering system before it is channeled to rotate a turbine's blades with a shaft, coupled directly to the electric generator motor.

The results from burning of coal for the purpose of generating electricity often come in a form of chemical compound with the most prevalent being carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide.

To lesser extent, can also include carbon monoxide, mercury, arsenic, lead cadnium and uranium. All of these have potentially negative impacts on the environment. Carbon dioxide in large quantities can tip the atmospheric balance and lead to the trapping of additional heat in the atmosphere, so it will become hotter near ground level.

Sulfur dioxide can cause more localized problem such as acid rain which can kill entire forest, ruins the surface of buildings and vehicles. Nitrogen oxide is dangerous at lower levels where people live, at lower altitude, ozone create smog and can trigger asthma attacks in those prone to them. Thus, it's considered a public health hazard.

Though steps have been taken to reduce coal emission in most country, the problem is still a major one in some part of the world, especially China, though to have claimed can control coal emission cheaply.

Why did TNB pick to choose steam turbine instead of GAS TURBINE or DIESEL ENGINE? Why did'nt they choose a GAS TURBINE that can directly be fueled with liquidified petroleum gas that is readily available from PETRONAS or a diesel engine driven generator, both with much lesser impact on the environment and public health.

The only reason why TNB had choosen steam turbine is, it's cheaper to maintain even though they would have to import the coal from INDONESIA. This so called CHEAP MAINTENANCE CANNOT JUSTIfIES RISK TO PUBLIC HEALTH AND HARM TO THE ENVIRONMENT. What happen if the oil price rises? price of  coal also rise and so is shipping cost.

According to mineral and geoscience report on the evaluation of coal potential in the PINANGAH (N.47 KUAMUT) area of 500 sq km, were divided into 4 blocks namely south block, west middle block, north block and east middle block.

West middle block alone yields an indicated reserve totalling 34 millions tonnes of coal deposited in 6 seams. The chemical analysis on 77 coal samples shows the coal rank are within the high volatile A - C range and suitable for power plant generation.

Now, what can we tell about this? Do you think that there's something fishy in TNB insistant to use a coal fired steam turbine? I'm not surprised they had moved the site nearer to the coal region. If a COAL MINE is the the answer, what will the KUAMUT people have to say about this? Anyway, by the end of the day, it's only a matter of theory.

Coal's Assault on Human Health
Coal pollutants affect all major body organ systems and contribute to four of the five leading causes of mortality in the U.S.: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory diseases. This conclusion emerges from our reassessment of the widely recognized health threats from coal. Each step of the coal lifecycle-mining, transportation, washing, combustion, and disposing of post combustion wastes-impacts human health. Coal combustion in particular contributes to diseases affecting large portions of the U.S. population, including asthma, lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke, compounding the major public health challenges of our time. It interferes with lung development, increases the risk of heart attacks, and compromises intellectual capacity.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are indicated as possible mechanisms in the exacerbation and development of many of the diseases under review. In addition, the report addresses another, less widely recognized health threat from coal: the contribution of coal combustion to global warming, and the current and predicted health effects of global warming...more

Oil Royalty Warrants Review - Kota Kinabalu (20 November 2008): State Government has been urged to initiate a review of the 1976 Petroleum Agreement between the State and Federal Government with the view to revise the oil royalty from five percent to no less than 20 per cent.
