SAPP: Coal plant idea not supported by public

Kota Kinabalu, Nov 15, 2009: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said the State Government proposal to construct a coal-fired power plant in the State is not supported by the people.

In fact, SAPP Tungku chief, Datu Suaib Mutalib said the State Cabinet led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman had rejected the proposal to build the plant in Silam, Lahad Datu, the site chosen by the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) before.

The reason given by the Chief Minister for the rejection of the coal-fired power plant proposal on April 2, 2008 was that it would be detrimental to the health of the people and the environment.

The people in Sandakan also objected to using the same arguments when Sungai Seguntor was chosen as the alternative site, he said.

"However, the State Cabinet and Sabah Barisan Nasional leaders, especially those from Umno, never objected when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that the plant will be built in the Felda Sahabat area also in Lahad Datu," he said.

Suaib said some of the Umno leaders in Sabah gave their fullest support to Najib on the matter and that the people in the State must be prepared to sacrifice to enjoy development through the setting up of the coal-fired power plant.

"It is puzzling as none of the Umno leaders has rejected the project with an open mind," he said.

Suaib also described the move by Sepanggar Umno chief, Jumat Idris, was "merely an act of lobbying for the Sepanggar Parliamentary seat" in the coming election.

He said the people in Lahad Datu did not object blindly to the proposal as claimed by Jumat but because they understand the consequences of building the power plant fuelled by coal to generate electricity.

Furthermore, Suaib said the leaders should just wait for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report to be finalised before pledging their support to Najib.
