The DAP leaders had been bad-mouthing Yong the whole night, prompting him who
what any gentleman would do by meeting them face to face.
Yong said he wanted to give his side of the story, after his invitation for a
public debate was turned down by DAP.
He added that it was best for the public to hear from both sides so that they
could judge for themselves which party should be elected.
"People should be informed of the truth; who should be responsible for certain
issue so that they would not be hook-winked into making certain decisions
influenced by lies and baseless accusations," he said.
He told supporters that he had gone over to clarify that he was not involved in
Project IC. He said they also prevented Dr Chong Eng Leong to speak when he was
ready to take the stage to clarify that Yong was not involved in ¡®Project IC'.
At a court hearing in year 2000, Dr Chong's witness testified to the court that
Yong was not involved with Project IC and phantom voters.
Present during the talk were Pakatan Rakyat leaders such as Luyang candidate
Hiew King Cheu (DAP) and Api Api candidate Christina Liew (PKR).
"I wanted a chance to reply to their lies in a debate but I was refused," Yong
He claimed that PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Idrahim was in the know about
Project IC as he was the Deputy Prime Minister and Umno deputy president in
charge of Sabah Barisan Nasional in 1990¡äs.
"Why are they blaming me when Anwar knows it all? Chong is so close to (former
chief minister) Datuk Osu Sukam and he knows it all too," he said.
"During my time as a Chief Minister, a few persons were arrested under ISA for
their involvement in Project IC. Everybody knows about IC problems; they just
talked but I took action to rectify the problems.
"Since DAP did not allow me to speak, I in turn asked Dr Chong to come over to
the SAPP ceramah to repeat what he had said earlier. We waited, but he did not
"We do not want to win on lies," he said, adding that Anwar could easily give
Sabah Pakatan leaders a clear picture on all those involved in Project IC.
"I just don't know why they want to mention my name. This is Sabah. Nobody can
bully a Sabahan," he said in a statement yesterday.
Police stepped in around 9pm to calm the situation.
SAPP has been having their political talk every night at the Foh Sang shop
Yong said open debate was the best avenue to allow the public to understand the
issues and manifesto presented by each political party in this election.
Yong, who went over to the Pakatan talk, was denied the chance to speak by DAP
organizer Fred Fung.
