Membership growing
KOTA KINABALU, 16 June 2009: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), the
biggest Sabah-based opposition party, surprisingly receiving
thousands membership application ever since left Barisan Nasional
barely few months ago.
SAPP Secretary General Datuk Richard Yong said more than 3,500
Sabahans of various races are joining SAPP after the party left BN
in September 2008.
In a statement, here, today, he said 41 new branches have also been
set up all over the State during that time.
He said the huge response also due to the re-branding exercise
launched statewide informing the people as well as members of the
party's non-racial concept.
"This is an effort to explain to the people of the SAPP's political
direction and struggle for the people to correct the various
imbalances between the Federal and Sabah Government.
"The reason why Sabah should be given 20 per cent petroleum royalty,
the seriousness of illegal immigrants are among the issues the
people of Sabah are most concerned with," he said.
He said the re-branding exercise was to let people understand that
SAPP's struggle is regardless of race as well as for a fair and just
society for Malaysians in Sabah.
According to him, SAPP also received new Bumiputera leaders and
thousands new Bumiputera members ever since.
He said the new branches that have been approved and submitted for
application to the Registrar of Societies are from Pensiangan, Sook,
Nabawan and Bingkor in the interior area.
"New branches near the State Capital are at Putatan, Karambunai,
Inanam and Kota Belud have also been approved," he said.
He said new branches at East Coast areas are from Apas, Merotai, Sri
Tanjung, Lahad Datu, Elopura, Tanjung Papat, Karamunting and Sungai
Sibuga.
"The party expects to see a continual formation of new branches and
more people joining SAPP with what we would expect huge turn-out at
the party's joint Annual General Meeting to be held between
September and November," he said.
He said Zone Committees and the respective Constituency Liaison
Committees (CLCs) will make necessary arrangements to organise the
branches' AGMs in their area.
