Jobless and homeless Sabahans in KL is saddening says SAPP
KOTA KINABALU, 18 Jan 2010: The plight of young Sabahans in the Peninsula
Malaysia under the noses of present Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders in
Kuala Lumpur is a sad phenomenon.
As such, the government must quickly address it, said Sabah Progressive
Party (SAPP) Presiden Datuk Yong Teck Lee.
"The outflow of many Sabahans to the Peninsula Malaysia looking for jobs
is proof that our State economy has failed them, although labour migration
is unavoidable the fact that many of these young Sabahans have become
destitute or getting into crime and vices are glaring signs that they left
Sabah ill-equipped and unprepared for the risks of being a migrant
worker," he said.
The former Chief Minister was commenting the news report appeared in The
Daily Express today, which said the number of Sabahans being jobless and
homeless in Kuala Lumpur are increasing.
Yong said he found it a disgraceful irony when one of Sabah Member of
Parliament got into an extravagant marriage in Kuala Lumpur recently when
so many of his fellow Sabahans are destitute and homeless in the national
capital.
He said the State Government through Sabah Liaison office in Kuala Lumpur
and its Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Members of Parliament from all
Sabah BN parties should collectively assist these stranded or destitute
Sabahans and, if necessary, arranges their trip home.
Yong said when he was the Gaya Member of Parliament some few years ago, he
visited a Sabahan who happened to be from the constituency at Sungai Buloh
prison to make sure he was healthy and his lawyer was doing his best for
him.
"I could see that this young Sabah chap was desperate and lonely," Yong
recollect.
As such, he said the government should consider a plan to transfer those
Sabahans who are imprisoned in the Peninsula Malaysia back to serve their
respective jail terms here.
He said similarly, the Peninsula Malaysians serving jail terms here should
be transferred back to their home state or nearest prison.
