Yong shows up at anti-coal protest

KOTA KINABALU (Feb 15, 2009): Residents of Taman Sibuga and Marwa staged a peaceful demonstration, "Friday at the POIC site at Seguntor, Sandakan, to express their "concern" and "stand on the rejection" of the proposed coal-fired power plant, said head of Sabah Environmental Protection Association Sandakan branch, Charles Chow, in a press statement.

The two housing estates which have a population of about 40,000 are particularly worried since they are located barley 5km away from the proposed coal-fired plant site at POIC Seguntor and, therefore, most vulnerable to sooty particulate of toxic fly ash from the chimneys, said Chow.

"The gathering was organized by the residents to call on the State Government and the relevant authorities to halt the plan to build the coal-fired power plant immediately", said Chow.

"It saw a strong presence of the Sandakan Anti-Coal Power Plant Action Committee members, headed by Chairman Stephen Wong", Chow noted.

"The event reinforced the concern the residents who maintained their steadfast stand on the rejection of the coal-fired power plant," Chow said.

One of a diversity of posters read: "There is no public acceptance of the coal-fired power plant in Sandakan."

"The adverse effects on public health, untold ecological and environmental damages, continues polluting emissions, wastes and exposures to hazardous heavy metals are serious threats," Chow quoted Wong as saying.

Chow said SAPP President Datuk Yong Teck Lee joined the demonstration (pic) upon hearing about the event.

Coal's Assault on Human Health
Coal pollutants affect all major body organ systems and contribute to four of the five leading causes of mortality in the U.S.: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory diseases. This conclusion emerges from our reassessment of the widely recognized health threats from coal. Each step of the coal lifecycle-mining, transportation, washing, combustion, and disposing of post combustion wastes-impacts human health. Coal combustion in particular contributes to diseases affecting large portions of the U.S. population, including asthma, lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke, compounding the major public health challenges of our time. It interferes with lung development, increases the risk of heart attacks, and compromises intellectual capacity.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are indicated as possible mechanisms in the exacerbation and development of many of the diseases under review. In addition, the report addresses another, less widely recognized health threat from coal: the contribution of coal combustion to global warming, and the current and predicted health effects of global warming...more
