Chua: Enough! Stop Power Disruptions in Tawau

Tawau, Aug 12, 2009: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Vice President and MP for Tawau, Datuk Chua Soon Bui said she is fed up with SESB for the incessant power disruptions in Tawau. She also received numerous complaints from the people on the frequent brownouts, and nobody attended to their hotline calls to SESB.

She said despite her many protests, demand and adjournment speech in the parliament in July regarding the major concerns of the people on the continuous disruptions of power supply, the ordeal continues to take place with its worst lasting about 6-7 hours in Sin Onn area last Sunday. Worst of all, Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd. (SESB) provided an unreliable schedule of disruptions that they didn't adhere to, causing more damages to the industries and business sectors.

She said since the SESB and TNB are accountable to the people of Sabah, especially Tawau, it is high time that the Prime Minister, YAB Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak respond to the people of Tawau. It is time to fulfill the one Malaysia concept of People first and Performance Now.

She queried on why the situation has not improved since the announcement by YB Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui, minister of energy, green technology and water in July on the delivery of mobile generators as short term measures for Sabah?

She said When TNB announced that there would be power disruptions in Kuala Lumpur in August (this month) due to upgrading its services, she was waiting for things to happen so that the people in KL would experience and understand the hardship experienced and suffered by the people in Sabah in the past for more than 20 years. But the notices for disruptions were announced and implemented promptly in KL, with minimum impact on the business sectors and people lives. She asked why are the people in Sabah and Tawau treated differently?

"If TNB can provide credible service to its consumers in west Malaysia, why can't they do the same in Tawau?

It was reported recently that millions of ringgits were lost due to the ISA rally on 1/8/09 in Kuala Lumpur. The government complaints department encouraged business sectors to lodge their claims against these people who took part in the rally. She suggested that the government complaints department should also expedite the payment of claims and compensations to the consumers in Tawau and Sabah who had suffered great losses during the power disruptions for the past years.

If the SESB and TNB continue to ignore the complaints of the people in Tawau, she will seek
solution directly from the Prime Minister and his administration.

"People of Tawau also seek transparency in how much non-revenue power was lost with illegal tapping of power supply, and why no long-term solutions are implemented after so many years?

Coal's Assault on Human Health
Coal pollutants affect all major body organ systems and contribute to four of the five leading causes of mortality in the U.S.: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory diseases. This conclusion emerges from our reassessment of the widely recognized health threats from coal. Each step of the coal lifecycle-mining, transportation, washing, combustion, and disposing of post combustion wastes-impacts human health. Coal combustion in particular contributes to diseases affecting large portions of the U.S. population, including asthma, lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke, compounding the major public health challenges of our time. It interferes with lung development, increases the risk of heart attacks, and compromises intellectual capacity.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are indicated as possible mechanisms in the exacerbation and development of many of the diseases under review. In addition, the report addresses another, less widely recognized health threat from coal: the contribution of coal combustion to global warming, and the current and predicted health effects of global warming...more
