Power from West-East Coast Grid only by end 2013

Kuala Lumpur, Oct 27, 2009: Member of Parliament for Tawau, Datuk Chua Soon Bui, questioned the federal government whether there is ulterior motive in forcing coal power plant project which is in direct conflict with the National Green Technology Policy (NGTP) launched by the Prime Minister in July this year.

Chua, who is also Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) vice president, said that the main objective is to improve the quality life of all Malaysians and avoid negative impact  on our environment and especially the health of the people.

The federal minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water said that  electricity supply in the East Coast of Sabah will be channeled from the power plant in Kimanis via the West-East Coast Grid only by the end of 2013 while answering Chua during question time in parliament.

The ministry also said that the awarding of tenders are only expected to carried out in October 2010 (300 MW capacity gas power plant by the consortium of Petronas and Sabah Foundation) and to start operations in three stages, with the generation of 100 MW power capacity for each stage. The first unit is scheduled to start functioning in December 2013 while the second in March 2014 and third one in June 2014.

"I therefore urge the minister to concentrate first on providing new and quality generators produced by Sime Darby, to be installed in Tawau by the end of the year to replace the old and out-of-date generators there.

"TNB insisted on building coal power plants in Sabah, the first one was planned in Silam, then it moved to Sandakan due to strong objection from the people, and now it moves to Kg. Sinakut Felda, Lahad Datu," Chua said.

Coal's Assault on Human Health
Coal pollutants affect all major body organ systems and contribute to four of the five leading causes of mortality in the U.S.: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory diseases. This conclusion emerges from our reassessment of the widely recognized health threats from coal. Each step of the coal lifecycle-mining, transportation, washing, combustion, and disposing of post combustion wastes-impacts human health. Coal combustion in particular contributes to diseases affecting large portions of the U.S. population, including asthma, lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke, compounding the major public health challenges of our time. It interferes with lung development, increases the risk of heart attacks, and compromises intellectual capacity.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are indicated as possible mechanisms in the exacerbation and development of many of the diseases under review. In addition, the report addresses another, less widely recognized health threat from coal: the contribution of coal combustion to global warming, and the current and predicted health effects of global warming...more
