Chua: Tawau is still deprived of needed infrastructure
Tawau, Aug 21, 2010: Member of Parliament for Tawau, Datuk Chua Soon Bui,
criticized the government for neglecting Tawau, being the third largest town in
Sabah, the much needed infrastructure. Tawau was only allocated RM835.02 million or a measly 3.81% of the total
Sabah budget of RM21.74 billion.
"The contribution of taxes and oil palm taxes from Tawau is one of the
highest in Sabah, yet Tawau still lack behind in many developments such as
continuous electricity and water supply, major roads, overhead bridges,
solution to problem of container vessels unable to berth at wharf due to
the shallow seabeds, widening of rivers in Tawau, more low cost housing to
solve the problem of mushrooming illegal squatters (of Sabahans) and plans
to weed out illegal immigrants.
"Tawau is also deprived of adequate facilities for multi-storey car
parks and specialists for the Tawau hospital, facilities for Fire & Rescue
Department, rubbish landfills or incineration.
Chua said that Tawau has been marginalized under the 9th Malaysia Plan
and therefore should not be marginalized again in the 10th Malaysia Plan.
The breakdown of project list and amounts of allocations given in 2008,
2009 and 2010 for Tawau Parliamentary Constituency is as follows:
