You can't have one without the others, Gabungan tells Warisan

KOTA KINABALU, October 23, 2016: Newly registered Parti Warisan Sabah, and the yet-to-be announced Parti Harapan, will have to deal with the United Sabah Alliance (Gabungan Sabah) to work out an opposition pact for the coming 14th general elections.

Leaders of Gabungan Sabah partners – Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS), Sabah STAR and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) – made it clear Sunday that they would not deal individually outside the coalition.

“If any of the new local parties want to work with us, it must be through the alliance,’’ Bumburing, who is PCS president, told reporters at a press conference held after the opening of the SAPP congress here Sunday.

“We (Gabungan) have worked for two years together. We cannot sacrifice that to any new player. They have to respect our unity if they want to work with us,’’ Bumburing who is also Tamparuli assemblyman, said.

Sabah STAR is under Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan while SAPP is headed by Datuk Yong Teck Lee, a former Chief Minister.

The three leaders stand together comes amid political talk that Warisan president Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal was seen keener to forge relationships with a certain political party within Gabungan Sabah, but not work together with alliance as a whole.

Parti Harapan is to be led by former Sabah PKR chairman, Datuk Seri Lajim Hj Ukin, though there is no news yet as to when that party will be launched.

At the same press conference, Yong revealed that Gabungan Sabah would be launching its joint charter on Nov 20 in efforts to intensify their groundwork in areas they will be contesting in the coming elections.

He said that the new emerging local parties created by those leaving peninsular based parties was a good sign, but if for some reason they are not keen to work with Gabungan Sabah, they would be cooperation with the new parties.

“SAPP together with our alliance partners, would continue to extend our hands of friendship and partnership to the new political parties,’’ he added.

Dr Jeffrey said that the national opposition political parties should leave Sabah parties to regain the state from the Barisan Nasional in the spirit of 1963 Malaysia agreement and USA would support them at the federal level.

Shafie, who has yet to make any serious formal or informal approaches to party leaders under Gabungan Sabah, which has led to speculation that the he plans to head into the coming elections with Warisan plus one other alliance member.

USA chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Mansoor, who was in Semporna when Shafie announced his resignation from Umno in July, said that there were some discussions but nothing was committal. - BorneoToday
