Yong Teck Lee: "This is my promise to you, that our struggle continues and I will always be by your side"...."Trust and integrity of the leaders are fundamental to the future of a country or a government or, in our case, SAPP as a serious political party of the future"

This is the start, not the finish of our journey

SAPP president Yong Teck Lee accepts his first electoral defeat in 8 outings, and vows to continue his 'Sabah for Sabahan' struggle.

"Yes, this is my first defeat in Batu Sapi. But our party values number six as it means 'resilience'. You fall, and you get up again,"

"You will fight and fight until you win, until you achieve autonomy for Sabah and a better deal for Sabah."

SAPP Parents' Day Do 2010

KOTA KINABALU, June 28, 2010: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President Datuk Yong Teck Lee reminded party members to respect their elders in his officiating speech at the SAPP Parents' Day dinner and celebration organised by the SAPP Wanita KK and Penampang Zone at Grand Port View Restaurant on Friday.

He said in this modern era, the lifestyles of our community changed to adapt the environment or situation.

"Previously children would return to their respective hometowns during the festive seasons to celebrate Hari Raya or Chinese New Year but now it was the other way round.

"More and more parents are going abroad to be with their children who are working there and have families there," he said.

In this respect, he said it was not necessary for the children to give big angpows or treat their parents to fancy dinners and give expensive presents.

"What is important and matters is for children to respect their parents," Yong said.

He cited an example in Sandakan a few months ago where the government gave RM300 each to senior citizens there, which was not properly organised showed disrespect to the senior citizens.

"Hundreds of the senior citizens were asked to go to the Community Centre (in Sandakan) to collect the money where they have to queue up and waited for long hours without water or food.

"They were also required to fill up application forms before proceeding to the paying counters. Some of these senior citizens did not succeed in getting their RM300.00 (reason unknown).

"Those who got the RM300 felt disrespected and angry, what more of those who did not get it.

"So what is the purpose (of giving this RM300) if they (the government) does not respect the senior citizens," he said, adding that for SAPP this should not be the way.

"Although our angpow is not that 'big', our food is simple and with inexpensive gifts but we respect the elderly," he said.

Yong also advised the youths to be wary of their health and not to be indulged in negative activities, particularly drug abuse because it would break their parents' heart.

He said that according to the United Nations' figure the global drug trade amounted to USD300 billion a year.

"The UN made June 26 as the World Anti-Drug Day," he said.

Meanwhile, SAPP Wanita Chief, Melanie Chia said this celebration was special because it marked their appreciation to parents for their sacrifices to bring up their children.

She also expressed appreciation to those attending the gathering as it showed their commitment and strong support as well as loyalty to the party especially in this time which is not easy to gather as one big family to celebrate the parents' day.

The highlight of the evening is to select the most senior (oldest) male, they are 85 years old Wong Tet Fook, 84 years old Datuk Hj Murshidi Nambi and 77 years old David Chew Yau Kiong. The most senior (oldest) female was 85 years old Chung Moi, 82 years Mah Foo  Tai and 77 years old Chong Moi Jin.

Other programs included the most look-alike mother/father and child contest, lucky couple of the night, singing and dancing shows.) more pictures click here
